What is Eye Movement Therapy?
Your Analytical Therapist in Montpellier
Eye Movement Therapy is a therapy where the patient, guided by the therapist, performs movements with the eyes in order to treat psychological trauma and the resulting blockages. Eye Movement Therapy helps to alleviate the emotional burden linked to traumatic events.
This therapy is specifically aimed at people with a notable behavioral change, conscious or unconscious, following a trauma (accident, sexual assault, terrorist attack, moral or physical harrassment, rape, etc.).
These people regularly relive the traumatic event in the form of flashes or dreams and can have strong and uncontrolled reactions which will considerably modify their attitudes in their daily life.
Eye movement activates all parts of the brain and provides the patient with new emotional and cognitive resources.
The alternating movement of the eyes restarts the processing of information, allowing the individual to move beyond the traumatic phase, to modify their perception and to draw new resources from their present reality.
In fact, Eye Movement Therapy helps unblock negative emotions stored in the nervous system, then helps the brain reprocess the experience so that it is assimilated.
What happens during an Eye Movement session?
Analytical Therapist at Montpellier
The therapist has the patient tell the traumatic story; an assessment of the intensity of the stress is made and will serve as a benchmark for the progress of the evacuation of the impact. Thinking of a meaningful image of the event, the patient is accompanied by the therapist in several series of eye movements from right to left, up and down etc. This procedure is done until the client notices a satisfactory reduction in their anxiety. Desensitization can be done in a few sessions, or sometimes just one. Eye Movement Therapy also addresses negative beliefs related to trauma. The objective will therefore be to identify and evaluate these debilitating beliefs and to substitute them with constructive beliefs. We thus modify the perception of the event in light of the newly acquired positive mental and emotional resources.
